A new clinical trial is underway to examine
the effectiveness of a 6-week specific rehabilitation program combining
education and exercises on walking capacity in patients with
lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Satterwhite Chiropractic knows
these Oxford spinal pain conditions quite well…and offers
a relieving treatment plan of Cox® Technic spinal manipulation and mobilization
with exercise!
EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS TESTED
The aim of this described study is to investigate
whether the addition of an exercise program to an educational
program can enhance walking capacity in those who
have lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Being a
randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 participants will be randomly assigned
to either the intervention or control
group. The intervention group
will get an educational program and an exercise
program, while the control group will only get the educational
program. The main outcome measure is walking capacity, while the
secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of
life. (1) Satterwhite Chiropractic knows our Oxford spinal stenosis patients are
quite concerned about these outcomes!
LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS WITH NEUROGENIC CLAUDICATION
Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal in
the low back area, which then
puts pressure on the nerves. This can lead to pain,
numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In really bad
cases, it can also make walking quite difficult.
The condition is a very common one in people over 50 years
old. These are just the folks in
Oxford who need to keep (or at least start) exercising!
THE EXERCISES
The specific exercises that will be used
in this trial are made to improve
walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles around
the spine. The hope is that by doing these exercises regularly, patients will experience less pain
and disability and have a better quality of
life.
THE CONTROL GROUP
The control group in this trial will only get
an educational program about their condition and how to take
care of it. While education is important, it is not typically
enough on its own to provide significant relief from symptoms. That's why the addition of an exercise program is
so important. It involves the back
pain patient in his or her relief! Listen to this PODCAST
with Dr. Michael McMurray on The Back Doctors Podcast with
Dr. Michael Johnson as he describes The
Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management for lumbar spinal stenosis.
