Oxford Exercise for Back Pain Relief: Whats Best? Good Question!

September 14, 2022

An age-old chiropractic patient question: “What is the best exercise I can do to get rid of this back pain?”

We all want the one “right” answer to make things better. We like to “just do it” and be done. Knowing just what the right thing is is the conundrum even for researchers and for your Oxford chiropractor. The key for all involved – researcher, doctor, patient – is to get to know the patient. Satterwhite Chiropractic gets to know each of our back pain patients to know better which exercise(s) might be most impactful. Our chiropractic services are here to help.

WHAT TO DO?

Researchers struggle to know what the right back pain easing exercise(s) is, too. A few researchers reviewed 118 back pain exercise trials with 9710 volunteers. They found that the most effective exercise modes for getting rid of pain were mind-body, core-based exercise, and Pilates. They found that the most effective means to reduce disability were Pilates, core-based, and strength exercises. According to a unique scoring system know as SUCRA which measures the rates the probability of an approach’s being effective revealed that Pilates ranked highest with 93% for likeliness of reducing pain and 98% for reducing disability. (1) Satterwhite Chiropractic will agree that those are extraordinary effectiveness scores!

BUT WHAT ABOUT…?

Other studies feature the effectiveness of other exercises, too. An analysis of 89 studies/5578 patients dedicated to determining the effectiveness of exercise for non-specific chronic low back pain reported that Pilates had the highest probability of decreasing pain, resistance training and stabilization/motor control exercise for improving physical function, and resistance and aerobic training for improving mental health. (2) Pilates won again! Then, in a 414 chronic low back pain patient study, core stability exercise reduced pain more and enhanced function better than general exercise. (3) And for back pain sufferers with a lumbar disc herniation, stretch and strength-based yoga proved itself to be a potential option to improve associated neuropathic pain, disability, and function in these patients by increasing mobilization, core muscle strength, and hamstring flexibility. (4) Satterwhite Chiropractic does not want to confuse you or lead you astray! We’ll just urge you to attempt a few of our suggestions and see how good they make you feel.
